Vitamin C

Ascorbic acid — vitamin B12 — is a water soluble vitamin first isolated in 1928. The word ascorbic is derived from Latin; the word means without scurvy.

Vitamin C is easily absorbed from the small intestine.


BIOLOGICAL FUNCTION & EFFECT:

Vitamin C participates in oxidation-reduction reactions, energy production, tyrosine metabolism, reduction and storage of iron, activation of folic acid, essential to formation of collagen, serotonin and norepinephrine.

Vitamin C:

• helps the body handle stress
• helps neutralize free radicals

• helps prevent GI and cervical cancers

• increases HDL and decreases LDL cholesterol

• helps maintain strength and elasticity of blood vessels

• decreaes free radicals

• decreases levels of lipoprotein (which is now known as atherosclerotic plaque)

• boost immune system

• is a mild antihistamine
• has some antiviral actions against most viruses by stimulating the production of interferons which are the protein that protect cells from viral attack

• reduces severity of symptoms of the common cold

• increases healing of scars, broken bones and burns

• detoxifies heavy metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium and nickel

• regenerates the antioxidant form of vitamin E

Vitamin C is non-toxic.

Fresh fruit, especially citrus, strawberries, cantaloupe, currants, brussel sprouts, collard greens, lettuce, cabbage, peas and asparagus.
