Vitamin B5

Pantothenic acid — vitamin B5 — is a water-soluble vitamin discovered iin 1933 by Dr. Roger Williams.

Williams found it in all cells, thus his name for it: pantothenic meaning everywhere.


BIOLOGICAL FUNCTION & EFFECT:

• is involved in the release of energy from carbohydrates

• is necessary for propery functioning of adrenal glands

• also functions in production of fats, cholesterol and bile acids

• is necessary for red blood cells

• has a role in carbohydrate metabolism, therefore boosts energy and athletic performance

• helps detoxify alcohol

• helps with stress

• relieves “burning feet” syndrome


• EFFECTS OF DEPLETION

Effects of depletion relate to the skin, liver, thymus, and nerves, though a depletion of B5 is rare because of its availability.


• SOURCES

Present in all plant and animal tissue.

Best sources are eggs, liver, fish, chicken, legumes, whole grain breads and cereals, cauliflower, broccoli, lean beef, white and sweet potatoes and tomatoes.
