Vitamin B12

Cobalamin — vitamin B12 — is a water soluble, red, crystalline substance.

It is red due to the presence of cobalt in the molecule. Large amounts of vitamin B12 are stored in the liver.

Vitamin B12 was isolated from liver extract in 1948 and shown to control pernicious anemia.

B12 is an essential growth factor and plays a vital role in the metabolism of all cells.


BIOLOGICAL FUNCTION & EFFECT:

• necessary for reducing RNA to DNA

• necessary and required for the synthesis of myelin, the insulation around nerves

• is involved in foic acid metabolism

• is involved in protein, fat and carbohydrate metabolism

• is necessary for the maturation of red blood cells

Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) has no knwn toxicity.


• EFFECTS OF DEPLETION

• fatigue
• nausea
• peripheral neuropathy
• tongue and mouth irregularities

• abnormally enlarged red blood cells

• depression, confusion and memory loss (particularly in the elderly)

• poor blood clotting and easy bruising

• dermititis
• vomiting

Deficiencies in the elderly cause such symptoms as moodiness, confusion, agitation, memory loss, abnormal gait, delusions, dizziness, dementia and hallucinations.
