| Vitamin B12 Cobalamin vitamin B12 is a water soluble, red, crystalline substance. It is red due to the presence of cobalt in the molecule. Large amounts of vitamin B12 are stored in the liver. Vitamin B12 was isolated from liver extract in 1948 and shown to control pernicious anemia. B12 is an essential growth factor and plays a vital role in the metabolism of all cells.
