Vitamin A

Vitamin A belongs to a class of compounds called retinoids which only occur in animal products.

Vitamin A was the first fat-soluble vitamin to be recognized. It was discovered in 1913 as a result of its ability to prevent night blindness.


BIOLOGICAL FUNCTION & EFFECT:

Studies show that adequate intake of vitamin A shows a reduced risk of epithelial-cell cancers [mouth, skin, lung, bladder, etc.

Vitamin A maintains the membrane-secreting cells that line all glands and organs.

Vitamin A facilitates in creating barriers to infection (with healthy epithelial cells).


•growth and bone development

Vitamin A is essential for the growth of bone and soft tissue and necessary for the formation of tooth enamel.

Liver, kidney, butter, egg yolk, whole milk, cream


• NOTES

Hypervitaminosis with vitamin A has been reported in adults taking in excess of 50,000 IU daily for several years and in a case of taking a water-soluble synthetic vitamin A at 18,5000 to 60,000 IU for several months
