Copper

Copper is an essential trace element mineral. It is a co-factor in many cupro-enzyme systems throughout the body. Dietary surveys suggest Americans get about 50 percent of the RDA for copper.


BIOLOGICAL FUNCTION & EFFECT:

• plays a central role in transport of oxygen throughout the body

• stimulates the absorption of iron

• involved in collagen production which determines integrity of cartilage, bone, skin and tendons

• involved in prodction of elastin, which is the protein that provides structural elasticity to tissues in the lungs, blood vessels, and skin

• is an important antioxidant

• has anti-inflammatory activity

• may play a role in osteoporosis and diabetes


• EFFECTS OF DEPLETION

Severe deficiency is rare but symptoms can include:

• loss of hair color
• anemia
• fatigue
• low body temperature
• kinky hair
• breakdown of connective tissue
• various cardiovascular problems
• nervous system disorders
• reduced resistance to infection

Oysters, organ meats, whole grain breads and cereals, shellfish, dark green leafy vegetables, dried legumes, nuts and chocolate
